Editorial Intern, National Geographic Magazine, Washington, D.C.                                        Spring 2012

• Conducted interviews and wrote articles for the Pop Omnivore blog on the National Geographic website. Conducted research for magazine articles and story proposals as needed. Participated in staff meetings and gained familiarity with the magazine publishing process.

Combat Correspondent/Supervisor, U.S. Army, Fort Lewis, Wash., and Iraq                          2005 – 2008

• Embedded with Army units in Iraq during major military operations and day-to-day missions. As a result ensured wide coverage of troops with news stories and features published in global print and online sites and photos picked up by news agencies such as the AP and Time (online).
• Supervised and mentored small team of journalists. Managed journalism training for new personnel, initiated field training for journalists in Iraq. Helped develop training handbook for stringers.
• Founding editor of monthly digital magazine in Iraq serving 3,000+ soldiers in Army brigade.
• Edited stories from stringers ensuring flow and AP style. Carried out monthly design and layout.

Assistant Editor/Staff Writer, U.S. Army, Fort Drum Blizzard, Fort Drum, N.Y.                     2004 – 2005

• Responsible for production of newspaper (circulation 12,000+) in the absence of the editor.
• Managed newspaper staff. Led staff in weekly design and layout of newspaper resulting in the publication earning first place for tabloid format paper in Army Northeast region, 2004.
• Pursued enterprise stories frequently, as a result earned awards and recognition from senior Army leadership for stories addressing topical issues relevant to the Army community.
